LIBERAL ARTS SEMINAR: TRADITIONAL CHINESE CULTURE CONFRONTS MODERNITY - 25280 - LAS 1063 - 05
Among all the nations of the world, China has one of the longest cultural and political histories. It has had transitory periods of world politial pre-eminence during the last 5000 years, but it is only during the forty years or so that it has re-emerged as a modern, first-tier, economic and political force. Following a brief overview of Chinese history and an examination of selected components of traditional Chinese culture (mostly in the areas of literature, art, and philosophy), this course offers students the opportunity to explore how the culture continues to affect (and, in turn, is affected by) the modernizing forces that have contributed to China's evolving political and economic power.
