Harbour Winn, Professor Emeritus of English at Oklahoma City University, will present on Tim O’Brien's The Things They Carried. A series of connected short stories with characters based on O’Brien’s own platoon from Vietnam, The Things They Carried has become one of the most celebrated works of literature about the Vietnam experience. The stories are rich with symbolism and explorations of the psyches of American combat soldiers before, during, and after the war. These stories leave readers pondering the deep question they pose, such as How do we define courage? Why does war make us feel more alive? And what is the truth buried within good war stories? This presentation is a part of the Oklahoma Humanities Let's Talk About It Oklahoma "War, Not War, and Peace: A Pulitzer Prize Centennial Series." All are welcome to attend.
