Russ Tallchief (Osage), of Oklahoma City University, presents S. C. Gwynne's Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. This work of nonfiction takes us back to the region’s earliest wars. In the story of Quanah Parker’s leadership during Indian resistance to white settlement, we become aware of how many vectors influence the development and subsequent playing out of war. From geography to politics to greed to treachery to cultural distance and difference, all are seen clearly in this book, and we are reminded of how fundamental war has been to our nation’s very identity. This presentation is a part of the Oklahoma Humanities Let's Talk About It Oklahoma "War, Not War, and Peace: A Pulitzer Prize Centennial Series." All are welcome to attend.
